What kinds of laboratory tests are available at RxDX?
Hematology is the study of blood, blood forming organs and diseases related to blood. Blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Change in the levels of these cells compared with the standard values may indicate some disease or a condition. Hematology helps in diagnosing conditions like anemia, leukemia, clotting disorders, thalassemia etc.
Microbiology and Serology:
Microbiology is the study of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and algae. These organisms are responsible for causing many kinds of diseases in human body. The microbiological assessment of a sample offers a broad selection of tests designed for rapid identification of the causative agent and prompt reporting of results. Our laboratory has executed culture techniques, and immunoassays which help in rapid detection and identification of common as well as rare microbial pathogens. Serologic evaluation is also available for confirmation of diseases by indicating the presence of specific antibody responses.
Clinical biochemistry refers to the biochemical analysis of the samples. Chemical reactions are used to evaluate the levels of various chemical compounds present in body fluids. Techniques such as spectrophotometry, immunoassays, and electrophoresis are used to measure the concentration of substances such as glucose, electrolytes, lipids, proteins, enzymes, hormones and other metabolic products present in human blood and urine.
Cytology is the study of individual cells or group of cells. Sample from a patient is smeared onto a slide and stained. A pathologist then examines the slide under the microscope to evaluate the number of cells, types of cells, how are they grouped and what the cell details are (shape, size, nucleus etc). This information helps in determining whether a disease is present and what is the probable diagnosis. Usually Cytology is used as a screening tool to look for a disease and to determine whether more tests are required or not. Investigation of a breast lump is an example of screening.
Immunology is the study of the immune system of our body which protects us from infections through various lines of defense. If the immune system does not function properly, it can result in diseases, such as allergy, cancer and autoimmune disorders.
